What we required was an extension to the house. We wanted a ground floor living space that had no stairs and steps so we could for elderly relatives and ourselves later life that we could access that so that was the project to start with and then once we’ve got the designs all done through the architects we went out to tender and that’s when we first came across Sawmill as part of one of the tender at the pre tender meeting.
Obviously the biggest problem for us was getting planning consent because the house is listed so lots of restrictions on there. So that took about a year to get planning process done. So once we were moving on to the construction phase, we were quite keen to get that moving. I’ve had friends that had previously bad experiences of contractors starting projects and then halfway through or a quarter of the way through leaving them or leaving them with problems. So I was pretty keen that we’re going to work with somebody that I was going to have confidence that they were going to complete without any problems.
Sawmill very very early on they got in touch with me. They were even at the pre tender stage. They came out, we talked through it, they sent us references, I contacted the references of other people who have had work done by them and all the feedback I was getting both in the quality of the work, the feedback of how the experience had been, was already positive and very good so that that’s led me to believe that out of the other tenders, they were the one I would prefer to go with.
We started in the middle of September and the first few weeks I’m impressed over how much work they did in such a short duration of time and we made really good progress. The workers were really really good. They just go on with a job and got you know, got cracking. Because we were still living in the house they worked around us and yeah, the experience was quite good.
We’ve now got the project finished and it’s great to have the space that we wanted and yeah, the project ran a little bit longer than originally planned and that was probably due to adverse weather over the winter we had some terrible storms and high winds and we were delayed with our window manufacturer as well. So once that was all done everything caught up and job was completed.
It’s not just the actual team that they actually have directly employed but the subcontractors they work with whether it’s electricians, plumbers, painter and decorators, all those trades that are not their own key trades. They’ve all got really sound people that come in and do the work for them turn up on the days they say they’re going to turn up and they just get on and get the job done And we had no problems at all with any any of them. Obviously with every project you’re going to have things that you find that are not planned, especially on their own property like this and they dealt with it really well with ourselves with the architects and both mutually trying to find a common solution to whatever problems we’ve came across.
I would just say they’ve been a really good contractor that we’ve worked with and and even now that they’ve followed up things like that. We’ve we’ve had no problem at all, good communicators and that I think that’s the key and when they say they’re going to do something to do it and that’s to me that’s the key thing with any project like this.
